Our story
Shan Mộc exists to keep a particular taste: ancient-tree Shan Tuyết from the Vietnamese north, made properly, spoken of with measure.
Shan Mộc returns to the original taste of Shan Tuyết — ancient tea trees grown among high mountains, cold mist, and time.
The house

The mountains
Northern Vietnam, where cloud does not hurry.
Hà Giang, Yên Bái, Sơn La, Lào Cai — highland provinces where Shan Tuyết trees stood before brands, before export. Limestone, poor soil, cold nights. The trees grow slowly. The buds are few.
This is not scenery for sale. It is the leaf’s condition of life. Shan Mộc chooses that condition, rather than correcting it for a market.

Ancient tea trees
Long-lived old tea trees, buds frosted with down.
Shan Tuyết is an old highland tea tree. Thick trunk. Deep roots. Larger leaves than plantation tea. Young buds wear white down — called snow. From one tree you can make white, green, yellow or black tea, according to the pick and the hand.

Local people
The people who keep the gardens are not extras.
Hmong, Dao and Tày people have picked and fired Shan tea longer than any label. They know which trees should rest. Shan Mộc works household by household, garden by garden, paying by the lot — not buying bulk to fill a container.

Tea makers
Taste while making. Stop when it is enough.
Making tea is a matter of watching: how far to wither, when to fire, how far to oxidise. There is process and discipline. A lot that does not hold does not enter the collection — even if the work is already spent.

Why the house exists
So mountain tea can speak in its own voice.
Vietnamese Shan Tuyết is easily blurred: tea with no garden, or tea dressed in images that are not its mountain. Shan Mộc stands exact, without inflation.
We built a house so drinkers can find a source, and so international partners can import something that can be explained: which trees, which mountain, which season, whose hands.

The name
Shan is mountain. Mộc is the tree, and the unadorned.
Shan — mountain, and the Shan tea tree itself. Mộc — wood, the plant, the unadorned. Shan Mộc is tea from the mountain, kept as the tree is, without lacquer.
The philosophy does not move: return to the original taste of Shan Tuyết — ancient trees grown among high mountains, cold mist, and time.
